6 degrees of 90's musicians.

These things just keep coming back don't they? I was actually having the same discussion I am about to have with you with someone else today. Let's play connect the grungers.

Dave Grohl is making fun of emo music. Seriously, this is as played out as saying, "all that and a bag of chips" is it not?

Speaking of Dave Grohl - Courtney Love has written some craziness in her blog. Talking shit about Gwen Stefani. I think we've covered this in a previous chapter haven't we?

I found this the other day - kind of old but really cute just the same. I love how towards the end someone is explaining to someone else who the guy is. Awe, poor Gavin. I heard his publicist was trying to pay some girls outside a club to make a scene when he walked out. Too bad I wasn't there, I would have made a scene for free - and possibly gotten arrested. YOWZA!

and some even more cuteness. Everyone is freaking out about the blonde hair - i think the gold chains are what we should be worrying about.

News from the Finns

Ville Valo is pissed about the smoking ban - which one would imagine considering how many packs he smokes a day (yes, packs.) He's apparently using his artistic license to smoke onstage but says he'll build a bar at his house and everyone can smoke whatever they want there.

Those are very select words there aren't they? Hmmm....I guess you can pretty much write off seeing him in a bar in the U.S. then huh or is it just the top tobacco producing state in the country that doesn't allow smoking in public. How ironic.

HIM - Kiss of Dawn video

Love the song. Love the video. Love them period. If you notice, the chorus sounds a little light but if you listen to the lyrics - definitely not light. "Tired of the games I'm playing with you when you're not here." I don't think I could love 5 men I barely know (yes, I met them once so it's barely) as much as I love them. Ville, I make fun of your hats and your bizarre facial hair but deep down it's my 5th grade way of flirting - you just aren't aware of it.....YET! MWHAHAHA

He should probably get a restraining order against me.

"Call me for a ride. Call me call me for some overtime."

I mean, I guess Deftones could have been qualified as Nu-metal...I dunno, I always thought they were a little too clever for that title.

Link

Speaking of Nu-metal or whatever you would call Hed (pe) their new album bombed like it was it's job in sales the first week, 5,400 copies. What's even more sad is that this ranked them #138 on the Billboard Top 200. The music industry is pitiful.

The Serpico interview

Everyone who has been reading us a while knows we LOVE Serpico. If you're new and haven't checked them out yet - get to it, they rule. We recently did an interview with their singer Mikey and since he and I have become friends we opted for something a little lighter and hopefully funny. Dig in.

What were you doing right before you sat down to answer these questions?

Playing a really crappy He-Man game on the PS2... I just bought it in this second hand games shop thinking "Oooh, He-Man, how retro-chic - I will be filled with nostalgia!". However, after about half a level I've been filled with boredom.

What's your favorite movie?

That's so hard... I'm gonna go for Switchblade Romance (or 'Haute Tension' to give it the original French title)... It's a French horror film and it's totally awesome. I'm not sure if it's my total favourite (note the correct spelling) film ever (let's go Transformers!) but it's definitely up there in the top group.

What's your favorite food?

Pizza with mushrooms and smoked sausage. I doubt you guys have any idea what smoked sausage is... just trust me it's awesome. If you're ever in Scotland I'd recommend trying one!

If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?

Other than going around looking at naked ladies... hmmm... that would probably take up a lot of my time... I'd probably go to a football match and make sure that my team won by tripping up all the opposition players! It'd be awesome, I'd get the rush of running out into a stadium full of people, making sure my team wins and freaking the hell out of everyone with my invisible ninja powers!

What was the first song you knew the words to?

I have no idea... I've always been singing! So it's probably some baby song in reality. When I was about 10 years old, I got big into pop music and I started buying tapes (OLD SCHOOL!) of that stuff... and I used to know all the words to those stupid songs. However, I'm gonna say that it was "The Touch" by Stan Bush, which was on the Transformers movie, which I watched hundreds of times... I loved (and still love) the soundtrack to that film and I'm pretty sure it was that which prepared me for metal when I was in my teens... so thank you Stan Bush for your super cheesy Van Halen rip off!

Do you have any nicknames? If so, what are they?

Nothing that people really call me all the time... although my band monikers so far are Captain Grammar (because I'm always correcting people's spelling and grammar) and Captain Pout (because I can't walk past a mirror or be in a photo without pouting/posing).

What band is your guilty pleasure?

I like loads of bands that people probably think are totally gay! I really like the All American Rejects... I really like Hinder - I like cheesy music. I'm not ashamed - I don't find them a guilty pleasure though, I just like 'em... and if anybody wants to disagree I'll take them down!

What is your day job?

Rockstar... I don't do anything else, so that's basically it for me! ;) Our bassist is a gym teacher, drummer is a bar man and one guitarist works in a shop... other guitarist is, like me, a full time gentleman of leisure/rockstar

Who is the craziest fan you've met?

There was a girl who jumped on me while we were out promoting at a Stone Sour gig, that was pretty crazy! She'd heard us on myspace and when she saw me she just attacked! lol... she came to our next gig and proceeded to jump all over me and bite me and stuff... I'd say that definitely was the most crazy so far! I'm sure we'll get some better ones soon...

Do you have any brothers or sisters?

Nope... I'm an only and that's the way I like it! I like being alone most of the time so it suits me :)

You have an interesting education for an aspiring rock star – enlighten the readers.

Okies... I went to a posh boarding school until I was 18 (although I actually lived at home cos it was like 5 mins from my house) and I was probably what you'd call a "Straight A Student"... cos I got all A's! Then I went to Oxford University and I studied Law for 3 years, which was pretty cool. I could have done post-graduate study in criminology but I really wanted to focus on the band... so maybe in 20 years when I'm an old haggard rock star I'll be able to go back to Oxford and do some post-grad!

On a scale of 1-10 how much do you love Shame-free?

I don't answer things on a scale of 1-10. I only work on a scale of 1-I Love Shame-free. So on a scale 1-I Love Shame-free I'd say about 1500. Work that one out...

The Strata interview

We've got a great new interviewer folks - please welcome Rose and her fantastic interview with Strata!!!!

Strata Hosts the End of the World
By Rose Spotts

When Sonny Moore, by way of a MySpace bulletin, mentioned his friend, singer/writer Eric Victorino, I'm not sure what made me go check out his MySpace. I think it was because Sonny seemed so inspired by this guy and Sonny, to me, seems to be very passionate about the things he is interested in. I figured this guy should be worth checking out at least. So I did, and I checked out his band Strata, and I found a new sound that inspired me. Music is one of the biggest inspirations on my own personal art and there was an emotion there, in the combination of lyrics and music, which I wasn't getting from the music I was currently listening to. I'd been stuck for so long listening to a lot of the same stuff and it felt like a rut to me. I wasn't getting inspired by anyone anymore until Strata.

Coming out of Campbell, California, Eric Victorino, Adrian Keith Robison, Hrag Chanchanian and Ryan Hernandez are the four individuals who make up Strata. Their first self-titled album, released on Wind-Up Records, made the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart in 2004 where it peaked at number 41. They've had two songs featured on movie soundtracks (The Punisher and Elektra) as well as the video game Madden NFL 2005. Their latest release Strata Presents The End of the World will be released on July 17th and I hope Strata are ready to conquer the world because after hearing this record, I'm pretty sure they're on their way.

Lucky me when I heard I would get to interview Strata about the new album. Even luckier me when they told me I would be getting Eric Victorino. Let me just put this out there, I'm no great conversationalist and I'm even worse when I'm talking to someone I hardly know so you can only imagine how it is for me to talk to someone I admire and look up to. But I did it and I got to ask Eric a few questions about the new album as well as his book. Did I mention, lucky me?

"I'll believe it when I see it." Eric started with, when asked how he felt about the new album coming out, an album that has apparently been pushed back quite a few times. "It's like we're at the end of 9 months of being pregnant and we're going to pop." Eric spoke to me on the phone from on the road where Strata was just wrapping up a tour with Finger Eleven, Chevelle and a few other bands. The album is a balance of dark and light. He points out, "I think it's pretty well balanced. There's some pretty low and high points on the record." With haunting lyrics and music that keep you thinking about it long after you've turned it off, it strikes below the belt one minute and tugs at your heart strings the next. "We knew this album couldn't be a sequel to the last one, we paid attention to every second of it while we were making it." he explained. According to Eric this was an album that had to be made and had to move Strata forward or they wouldn't be making music anymore. Making this album was a long hard road for the members of Strata between the stress and the personal sacrifices and the strain it put on personal relationships, it was necessary for it to come out meaning something more than just a second record.

With a title like Strata Presents the End of the World, one might expect it to maintain a darkness or a negative end of some sort. Whether that ending is the end of the world or the end of the hopelessness you might find in the world, this album offers up both sides with an innocence that Eric feels needs to be there, "It's sort of childish to think everything is going to be alright." To convey that feeling the band wanted to go with an artist for the album cover who could put that idea out there visually. The cover was created by West Coast artist, Anne Faith Nicholls whose art conveys that combination of hopelessness and innocence that Eric says the band was looking for with this album. As for what other artists influenced this album, he says the list would be way too long to mention. While he was listening to people like Bright Eyes and Death Cab for Cutie, he says the other guys in the band were listening to their own influences. "I think that is what makes Strata so unique" he explained, "it's four artists each with their own influences coming together to create the sound."

I asked him about touring with this album and he said they're going out with it but that they've been playing the new stuff a lot on the road already. "We've been pissing a lot of old fans off by not playing a lot of old stuff on this last tour," he told me happily, "but we're trying to move forward and show how much we believe in this new stuff and in this album." When it comes to playing he told me he prefers to play smaller places. Recently they had the chance to play larger shows where there were crowds as large as 2000 to playing shows of as little as 50 the next night and he said playing to a smaller crowd really makes a difference, "When you can see the faces of the people as you're singing words you believe in, it really means a lot."

Since I got to talk to Eric, I couldn't let him go without mentioning his book of poetry and prose, Coma Therapy, which is going into its second printing. "Thank you, I didn't think it would do what it has done." he answers somewhat quietly when I congratulate him. Inspired by listening to some recordings of his favourite writer, Charles Bukowski, he plans to piggyback the Strata tour with some poetry reading dates which he says is a little different than what he is used to, "It's going to be scary. I'm used to having a band when I'm up there." He's hoping to find some coffeehouses where he can get up there and read, not knowing what he might encounter. "You just don't know." he laughs. Anything can happen.

Eric and the rest of Strata seem like a band that believes anything can happen. Putting yourself out there is one thing, but putting yourself through it all to get out there gives more meaning to the outcome. With their latest release, Strata cuts open a vein and lets it all out. I'm thinking if you can listen to this album and feel nothing, you're probably already dead. Strata Presents the End of the World is released July 17th. Be there to see it all come down.

The Kill Hannah interview

Last night I went to the Flyleaf w/Kill Hannah and special guests Resident Heroes and Sick Puppies show at Headliners here in Louisville and I must say it was damn good. I was surprised by how many people there were fans of all four bands and not just Flyleaf or Kill Hannah. I will point out though that during the end of the Kill Hannah set Mat Devine (yes, D-E-V-I-N-E) wiped all the sweat from his body and hair and threw it in the audience. Naughty. Also, does anyone know what's up with the white hoodie he was wearing? Oh well...

Ok now on to the good stuff

THE KILL HANNAH INTERVIEW!!!

I scored an interview with Greg Corner, bassist for Kill Hannah. To you people out there who are thinking, "She should have gotten Mat" just so you know, I could have and chose not to. Greg was super sweet and after meeting him before the show he was the first one to arrive outside to offer his services. He sold me when he said, "We can do it or I mean, do you want Mat instead?" I thought, "No doll, you're perfect!" (I don't roll like that with the, "I only interview the singer" shit.) It was dark outside so we climbed into their van (it's full of empty mini cereal boxes and crumpled paper) and started the interview.

Most HIM fans know there is a connection between Kill Hannah (KH) and our favorite Finnish goth rockers. I asked Greg to expand on this and he said that KH was one of the first bands to tour with HIM in the U.S. and touted KH as the best openers to ever play with them. Greg also mentioned that KH were actually performing covers of Wicked Game and Rebel Yell at the same time HIM were which further sealed their similarities and cohesiveness.

I wanted to discuss their image since it is a major part of their identity as a band. Needless to say their image is inspired bands like The Cure and Morrissey but Greg stated that, "(their look) is just who we are." He went on to say that Mat has been wearing stripes for as long as he's known him and that when they began it wasn't cool to wear make up and wear flamboyant clothing which now has become mainstream. He's disappointed that now as bands with similar images gain popularity KH are viewed as followers rather than leaders with the movement. As Lily Allen would say, ever since they can remember they bin poppin' their proverbial collars. He went on to mention a certain group that have recently adopted a "military/marching band" look stating that KH had done it in one of their first photo shoots but now that "said band" had done it, it was suddenly cool. I don't think he was talking about The Matches. ;)

This discussion of "said band" parlayed itself into a discussion on the term, "emo." Kill Hannah are frequently lumped into the emo category along with many other bands that are indeed, not emo. Greg mentioned that the first time he heard the term emo is was associated with bands like The Get Up Kids, and that very few bands these days termed as emo sound anything like them. I mentioned that HIM are frequently qualified as emo, news that caused him to shoot me a confused look. He and I then attempted to lump HIM into a category, which we were unable to do which brought us full circle to their categorization We agreed that KH and HIM were hard to categorize because they embodied so many different styles of music. In the same vein, I then asked him which song he felt best exemplified the KH sound. Assuming he would say "Lips Like Morphine" I was surprised to hear "Kennedy" come out of his mouth. However, after re-listening to both of them, of course, he's right. "Kennedy" is playing on our page if you're interested.

Finally, I wanted to know what would be the main reason you guys should check them out, specifically HIM fans who don't already know about them. Focusing on the HIM aspect Greg explained that HIM and KH are very similar in that their both are darker lyrically and musically, they have a pop sensibility, and they focus on writing witty, clever lyrics. All qualities one would associate with HIM.

Special thanks to Bobby, my man with the plan, KH's manager and of course Greg who was amazing and apologized twice for taking a phone call before talking to me. They were so damn good live not to mention the subtly naughty lyrics I know you kids love and the vision of Mat tearing at his clothes. For proof of these claims check out their video for "Lips Like Morphine" below.

The Madina Lake interview

From Them, Through Me, To You - The Madina Lake Interview

I have been working on this interview since January and I am so excited to finally bring it to you guys. I was fortunate enough to have a quick chat with all four members of Madina Lake at Bamboozle and discuss their album, "From Them, Through Us, To You."

I first wanted to discuss the idea behind the debut album. As some of you are aware it revolves around the disappearance of Adalia, a socialite-type character from Madina Lake, a location that is reminiscent of a sleepy town from the 1950's. I'm not good at figuring out clues so I was interested in knowing the best way to follow the story as hints and messages are revealed. Matthew Leone, bassist and visionary for the story, explained that there are currently "webisodes" on their website at http://www.wheresadalia.com/. These offer background information and prepare you for the remainder of the story. Additionally, they will soon be releasing a series of stories that will introduce characters, locations and plot lines to further fill out details of the story. This will make following along and ultimately solving the mystery of Adalia's disappearance more cohesive. Singer and twin brother to Matthew, Nathan Leone, continues that there will be two more albums to finish out the story and that at the end, "A HUGE message" will be revealed.

Seeing them live was a first for me and I let them know that I thought they were better live than on the album. It's an odd compliment but to me means they have actual talent rather than a gift for pro-tooling. Their live show completely envelops you and I was interested in knowing what got them hyped before a show and what kept them interested in consistently putting on such an amazing performance. Matthew was quick to mention yoga and Red Bull to which Nathan added that on a less, "cliché" note, the shows were so good because the music is part of who they are and that they take a deep interest in every performance. They created it and the feelings behind the songs are an extension from them, to you (anyone catch some of that in the album title?).

Nathan continued by mentioning that a lot of bands get onstage and seem completely uninterested in what they are doing. That they give off an apathetic vibe and that performing is a burden for them. They aspire to never be that way because it's the fans that they perform for and who they're interested in keeping entertained.

They begin discussing something that is a common theme from their shows: they are not interested in being part of a "scene." They don't want kids to listen to their album because it's something their friends are doing or because they feel like it would be the cool thing to do. I add in that I am 25 so I am no longer subjected to "peer pressure" but corroborate with them by saying that I can go from Manson to Amy Winehouse to Madina Lake and not flinch to which they all say in unison, "Exactly!." At a Madina Lake show everyone is friends. There is no drama; there is no "being better" than someone else. Everyone is there for the same reason – great music and a bit of camaraderie.

I close out the interview by asking them what they think is the best reason for someone to buy their album and take a chance on a band they may be unfamiliar with. Matthew thought for a second and said that the answer for this question would be too long for a short interview since the band is so multi-faceted but was able to consolidate it into a more general answer. He stated that he wanted people to check out the band on their own and decide for themselves if they were into it rather than following the crowd. That Madina is a band about not fitting into a specific scene and being comfortable with following your own path. A message they hope rings true through their music.

Madina Lake collectively have this incredible ability to involve everyone in the show. They can turn even the greatest cynics into believers after seeing them live simply because you can't look away. Whether it's diving into the crowd or flailing instruments, it's a sight to behold and it keeps your attention to the last note. They were amazingly nice and I think them for the opportunity and the time they took to meet with me.

p.s. Whilst re-telling my account with Madina to my hetero life partner he responded to the "big message" statement with, "I hope it's a bigger message than the 'We're actually Christians' ICP came out with and lost 3/4ths of their fan base." We're a match made in asshole heaven.

It's not exploding too loudly, especially considering I haven't heard anything about it for 6 months. Gene - what are we going to do with you and your ego?

We all know I hate Spinner.com - in addition, they just moved a few notches lower. Why you ask? They interviewed HIM and it's total shit. One of these days we're going to interview them and it's going to rule. Not one of these suck interviews for and by people who don't know a damn thing about them. Seriously, did they really need to ask who they were influenced by?

Lostprophets are in the studio. They're in L.A. so to all you Cali Ian stalkers your odds don't get much better than this.

Ok, despite her plastic face and insane lifestyle, I sometimes really want to like Courtney Love. I took a chance and listened to her new song, Dirty Girls and honestly, it bored me to tears - well, maybe just bored me to yawn.

Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters will be playing with Coheed on their new album. Bonus points if you can tell me what female artist Taylor's first major gig was with. Also, he's in a side project with someone who was also part of this "big gig." I may know waaay too much about Taylor Hawkins.
